The day the girls returned to me after 6 1/2 years. The author of this article for the Chicago Tribune just happened to email me requesting an interview right at the time the girls returned to me. Quite the coincidence
All over again: The joys and trials of raising grandchildren - Chicago Tribune
ARTICLE IN CHICAGO TRIBUNE
I am a great grandmother, aged 67 and have adopeted my greatgrandaughter, having custody of her since she was 3 mos of age. She is now 3 and a half and I love her as if I gave birth to her myself. I am just now retiring from my employment and look forward to even more fun times with her. I am divorced, and to all the world it is just her and I, but I would do it all over again in a heartbeat. My life is so blessed because of her. God provides all that is needed and I believe she keeps me young. What better way to leave a mark on the world than to raise a beautiful child who has the world of something special to offer. IT is my privilege not my obligation to raise her.

Roberta, you make a good point. We are a lot older by the time the kids are teens and often our bodies feel it. However, there are some older grandparents who take on little ones as well. I don't know how they do it.

It is a great article but no one seems to address how much harder it is to raise teens than younger kids. There is the expense of college, worrying about school etc. And we are much older by the time they are teens.
