This is the first Christmas that I have not spent with at least some of my children and grandchildren. That is 40 years worth of Christmases. This is definitely not my first choice of how to spend the Christmas holidays. Gifts were mailed last week to children and grandchildren. To avoid totally wallowing in self-pity, I have chosen to do things this Christmas that I have never done before.
I spent most of this past week volunteering with an organization passing out Christmas gifts to grandparents raising grandchildren. Today, Christmas Eve, I got a manicure and pedicure and will go to midnight Mass with a friend. Tomorrow on Christmas Day I will go to a movie with a different friend and see the musical Les Miserables. I am purposely doing things unlike my typical, anything to not constantly trigger memories and feel sorry for myself.
To all you grandparents who are still raising your grandchildren, I wish you a very Merry Christmas. I hope your holidays are wonderful and you are building wonderful memories with your grandchildren, memories that will last a lifetime.
