For many grandparents raising their grandchildren, life is so demanding that it affects their health negatively. I suppose that might also depend on the age of the grandparent and many extenuating circumstances. The following is a comment by a single grandmother from Alabama raising her two grandchildren. I wanted to share her positive story.
Although, my health is not excellent, it has improved since I started taking care of my grandchildren. I have lost weight and I drink vitamin shakes, as well as staying active through out the day. I, too, stay involved in their lives at school. I make sure that we do something at least once a week, and I make them go outside and play almost everyday... rather it be playing ball, throwing frisbee, or walking we are staying active. Of course, there is room for more improvement, but I have come along way since I have started taking care of them. I guess you could say that they too take care of me. Before custody, all I did was go from the bedroom, to the computer room. Wow...what a difference they have made in my life. More importantly, we are in counseling, which helps us maintain an emotional balance, as well as a spiritual. Now, we have a ways to go, but at least we enjoy life again. And, the children are starting to smile again, and for that I am forever grateful.
If only all grandparents could have such a positive story to tell. Feel free to email me with any comments on how you take care of yourself and your grandchildren in a positive way. Of course you are always free to email with any difficulties as well.
