Several months ago I wrote a post about how home security systems can not only protect a family against intruders but can also help give grandparents reassurance that their little ones will not get out of the house without them knowing it. After writing that post, I thought about a single grandmother I knew a few years ago whose biggest concern was not the children getting out of the house but the men her daughter would bring into their home in the middle of the night. Since both the grandmother and mother shared the cost of the rent, the daughter felt entitled to bring her dates home with her. I think that is when I would add a surveillance option to the home security plan.
I talked with this grandmother about her concerns and her options. Sadly she had few options. She never really knew if the daughter would bring a stranger home or simply not come home at all. The stresses that grandparents face when raising grandchildren varies, but this situation must have been extremely difficult. The grandmother did not have custody of the children. When she attempted to file for custody, the daughter simply took the children and moved out of state to live with an x-boyfriend and his new girlfriend. Many grandparents have expressed to me this very concern. Unfortunately it is a legitimate concern for many grandparents, actually a nightmare.
